Upon reaching retirement age, married couples or long-term partners may both be receiving the Age Pension. They may have lived together for a considerable period of their lives and during this period where both able to look after all their personal needs themself.
When one partner experiences a significant medical condition, disability, or substantial decline in their functional ability due to advanced age and is unable to independently manage their personal care, the other partner typically assumes the role of providing professional care, support, and assistance.
They may also be receiving support from other Commonwealth Agencies to facilitate the care their partner needs.
Even if both individuals are already receiving a Commonwealth Payment or support from other government agencies, the situation may entitle the partner providing personal care to receive the Carer Allowancein addition to the Age Pension.
